A BOOK FOR PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WANT TO SPEAK IT

Don't Learn Spanish.

Learning was always the decoy.

You took the classes. You kept the streak. You're still not speaking Spanish — and it was never your fault. People who try Spanish split into two groups: the ones forever "learning" it, and the ones living in it. The difference isn't talent, age, or the method. This book is about the one thing it actually is.

Everything the language industry told you is backwards

  • The lie: the right app or method will finally get you there. The truth: the hunt for a fast method is itself what's keeping you slow.
  • The lie: languages are learned — rules, lists, tests. The truth: you never learned English. You let it in. Spanish works the same way.
  • The lie: kids soak it up; your window closed. The truth: a "fast" toddler gets 10,000 hours of input. You got 300 and blamed your age.

"The route you take is almost meaningless. Time in the language is it."

That one sentence would have saved me years and real money. The book is what happened when I finally believed it — and rebuilt my ordinary days so the hours piled up on their own. It works the same whether your Spanish-speaking world is a mercado in the Andes or a taquería, a neighbor, and a phone full of stories in Ohio. The hours are already hiding in your day. The book shows you where.

The Book

Fifteen short chapters. No 30-day plan, no grammar tables, no gamified anything. One rule that actually governs whether you end up speaking Spanish, and a way of living that makes the hours pile up without forcing them.

You'll get the whole toolkit: where the hours hide in a day you're already living, the load-and-fire trick that welds vocabulary in permanently, how to recruit your friends as correctors without a single awkward lesson, why your pronunciation is a passport and not a paint job, and the "sandwich" audio method that lets you follow real Spanish stories from day one.

Inside

  1. Part I — The Lie: the shortcut hunt, why you can't "learn" a language, the myth of the magic child
  2. Part II — The Only Rule: time in the language, enjoyment as the engine, plateaus and leaps
  3. Part III — Bring It Into Your Life: the six tools, from where you sleep to what's in your ears
  4. Part IV — The Life You Get: membership, ignition, and the person you become on the other side
Who is telling you this?

Who is telling you this?

Rod Shorette

I'm not a linguist. I spent my working life in factories — building fiberglass dune buggies, running a four-color printing press, managing a packaging plant, teaching Continuous Improvement in businesses large and small. I became an expert at finding and eliminating waste. Then I retired to Cuenca, Ecuador, refused to live in the gringo bubble, and ran my Spanish life like an experiment.

Six years later, I'm — my friends' phrase, not mine — the guy who speaks Spanish. I also run a language program in the Andes where seventy Ecuadorian students a semester are proving the same ideas in the other direction. The book is the experiment's report.
